Learning English Using The Structural Approach is suitable for non-native speakers who will be able to analyse and synthesise English sentences.
Learning English Using The Structural Approach is suitable for non-native speakers such as Malaysians as they need to understand Traditional Grammar for the Transmission Skills – speaking and writing.
The approach is based on objective facts which cover Traditional Grammar, Syntax, Sentence Structures, and Substitution Tables.
By learning the language using the Structural Approach, a learner is able to analyse (break-up) and synthesise (build-up) sentences.
AN APPROACH FOR NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS
For example, how do non-native speakers become proficient in the language in an effective way?
First of all, they should learn Traditional Grammar, sentence structures, syntax, sentence-building, spelling, punctuation, comprehension, summary, etc.
Second, it is always safe and wise for them to adopt tried, tested and established rules concerning the language.
In addition, when people learn Traditional Grammar, they are in a better position to write sentences, paragraphs and essays clearly, correctly and confidently. In fact, the study of Traditional Grammar alone in its entirety is a purely mechanical exercise.
Hence, learners must understand Traditional Grammar to obtain the necessary knowledge and skill to write sentences clearly, correctly and confidently.
TRADITIONAL GRAMMAR
When students learn Traditional Grammar, they will acquire facility and proficiency in writing correct English sentences.
Accordingly, they express themselves clearly, correctly and confidently.
Furthermore, learners can add variety and freshness into their writing after they have learned the different sentence structures. As a result, learners improve their spoken skills at the same time.
In brief, learners must know WHAT TO SAY and HOW TO SAY IT.
People speak and write proficiently when they possess the necessary language “equipment” such as grammar, sentence structures and sentence-building.
Surely, it is not enough for people to be possessed with inquiring minds. They must have the power to express their convictions too.
Clearly, the purpose of reading is the understanding of what is read. https://data.oecd.org/pisa/reading-performance-pisa.htm
For the above reasons, non-native speakers must learn the language using the Structural Approach.
WHERE DID MALAYSIANS GO WRONG IN THE LEARNING OF ENGLISH?
In this video, I explain the truth about the atrocious standard of English among MOST Malaysians today.
For every effect, there must be a cause. The reason for MOST Malaysians’ atrocious standard of English today is the use of the CLT Approach (Communicative Approach) to learn English, which is not based on the study of Grammar.
Since 1970, Malaysians have been using the CLT Approach to learn English. As non-native speakers, Malaysians must learn Traditional Grammar to be proficient in spoken and written English. The Structural Approach to learn English, which is based on the study of Traditional Grammar, was widely used in Malaysia before 1970. Malaysians who learned English using the Structural Approach before 1970 were proficient speakers and writers of the English language.
HOW TO LEARN ENGLISH THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY
THE 8 PARTS OF SPEECH – THE FOUNDATION OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Words are not all of one kind. For example, we can see that pencil, boy, bird are words of one kind; and that to, from, up are words of quite a different kind.
There are eight different kinds of words. The special name for the kinds of words is the parts of speech.
Each part of speech has a name, as follows:
NOUNS, PRONOUNS, VERBS, ADVERBS, ADJECTIVES, PREPOSITIONS, CONJUNCTIONS, INTERJECTIONS.
The 8 Parts of Speech are the foundation of the English language. Without this strong foundation, nobody can progress in learning English correctly and confidently. There is a great possibility that the majority of the Malaysian educators may not even have a strong foundation in those 8 Parts of Speech. Look at the results of the terrible proficiency in the English language among young Malaysians today.
When the Malaysian educators don’t teach their young the true substance of the English language, their young will be incapable to perform their best in the global economic village.
